Malfatti & Tacchini Spa

Hardware & Plumbing

M&T, a specialist in security and hardware for over 100 years, aims to be an indispensable partner for industry, traditional and modern distribution in the development of the security market by combining an important service offering in all other commodities handled by the hardware channel.

Technical expertise, efficiency, service, punctuality, quality, innovation and fairness are the guiding values of every business activity.

The decision to implement the StockSystem WMS was the right one because it was the result of an evaluation not only of the software's features but also of Replica Sistemi's ability to guarantee us development in the future. Replica Sistemi's technicians demonstrated specific skills and were able to advise and guide us in strategic logistics activities.

Case study Malfatti & Tacchini - Hardware warehouse logistics

M&T, a security and hardware specialist for more than 100 years.

The Malfatti and Tacchini company was founded in 1908 through the entrepreneurial idea of the two founders to import and distribute hardware items from Germany, with a focus on locks and security at the time.

In 1950 the Company extended its distribution of locks, tools and hardware items to the whole of Italy.

In 1970, the Company's exponential rate of development became evident: from the new, expanded Bresso Headquarters, Malfatti & Tacchini's activities focused on global distribution in Lombardy, consolidating distribution in the rest of Italy.

The growth in turnover was accompanied by major organizational adjustments: in 1995 the logistics unit in Ossona (Milan) was inaugurated where bulkier goods were handled.

In 2005, sales volumes dictate further expansion and concentration of all logistics activities in Ossona where major investments are made in modern automated management systems to ensure maximum accuracy and speed of shipments.

Paderno Dugnano logistics is the supply point for all hardware stores in Milan city, hinterland and Brianza.

The new counter sales area is characterized by a new concept: a real point of sale inside the warehouse, partly organized for free service sales, and partly an important display showcase reserved for the latest innovations from the world of security production.

SERVICES

Logistics is the company's core business, as it markets products by buying them from about 600 suppliers and reselling them wholesale to numerous customers, making about 200 deliveries daily.

Speed of delivery (within 12h in the provinces of Milano, Varese, Pavia, within 24h in mainland Italy, within 48h on the Islands).

Interactive business relationships.

An innovative automatic storage system.

Malfatti & Tacchini's organization is at the forefront in all crucial phases of its work.

The main corporate objective of Malfatti & Tacchini S.p.A. is to make quick and careful delivery of at least 99% of the goods ordered.

PROJECT GOALS

  • Reduce errors.
  • Reduce order fulfillment time.
  • Speed up goods transfer operations from Ossona.
  • Improve workload for each warehouse operator (picking routes).
  • Measuring warehouse performance (introducing KPIs, measuring parameters through StockSystemEvolution dashboard).
  • Flexibility in managing warehouse space (many references in and out each year).
  • Certainty of inventories.

NEEDS

Prior to implementing the StockSystem WMS (Go live on October 17, 2012), order and warehouse management was done using AS400 management software. All picking was done by hand using paper and the quantities picked were confirmed, by hand, on AS400. There was one person dedicated to final control. Error complaints from customers were about 4% of the orders.

The warehouse was already coded (fixed warehouse mapping), but there were still the following issues:

  • goods have very different volumes: they range from small parts to high-volume products (e.g., safes) that require special shelving;
  • it was difficult to identify the volume of picking and to schedule picking so as not to overload operators;
  • there were large differences in inventory and physical stock of goods, compared to accounting (very costly inventory).

  • WMS: StockSystem

  • Hand-held Hardware: 14 terminals MC9190 and 2 MC

In 2012, M&F decided to rely on Replica Sistemi's StockSystem WMS to manage the logistics flows of the Ossona warehouse, interfaced with the AS/400 management system (also in anticipation of the move to Paderno)

The following analyses were made:

  • Materials analysis
  • Analysis of managed flows
  • Analysis of warehouse layout
  • Analysis of warehouse spaces + mapping (Ossona+Bresso => Paderno)

ACHIEVED RESULTS:

  • Increased productivity and speed in picking by more than 30%.
  • Reduction in errors and complaints from customers to <1% of orders resulting in better customer service.

  • Real time inventory.
  • Ease of wms integration with other systems to complete information management.
