Froneri Italy Srl

Food & Beverage

In 1919, Angelo Motta founded a pastry shop in Milan, specializing in panettone, which allowed him to open several stores. In less than ten years, the small shop became a full-fledged factory. By the late 1930s, Motta created a revolutionary product: a wooden stick covered with fiordilatte-flavored ice cream, followed by the launch of Mottarello ice cream in the 1950s.

In 1952, Tanara s.r.l. was established in Parma, with the Marchi and Barilla families contributing capital and entrepreneurial mindset, while Giuseppe Tanara and his son Giovanni brought their expertise. The production of packaged ice cream grew rapidly, with the introduction of Coppa del Nonno in 1955. In 1964, a new plant was opened in Parma, and within 12 years, Tanara became one of the leading companies in the sector.

In 1967, the multinational W.R. Grace acquired control of Tanara, allowing the company to adopt international management practices. In 1975, Sme fully acquired Tanara, Motta, and Alemagna. The latter was merged with Motta into Unidal, and ice cream production was transferred under the name Italgel in 1976.

In 1983, La Cremeria was launched, followed by Maxicono in 1985 and Maxibon in 1989. In the early '90s, Italgel was put up for sale, and in 1995, it merged with Nestlé, becoming part of its ice cream and frozen foods division. In 2016, the business was transferred to Froneri International PLC, a joint venture between Nestlé and R&R, with an even greater focus on product development.
